What we do

International Lawyers for West Papua (ILWP) is a network of legal professionals who work towards the realisation of West Papua’s right to independence, as well as the strengthening and preservation of other human rights. We help the indigenous people of West Papua exercise their rights.

General Counsel

We provide legal advice to the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), the independence organisation leading the movement, and their leader Benny Wenda. ILWP directly assists bilateral and multilateral efforts by the ULMWP, particularly with country delegations in Geneva and New York.

Legal action

We research, strategise and act at the local, regional and international level. We make submissions to the United Nations, file for West Papuan recognition in international and regional bodies, and advise countries how to support the cause.

Public advocacy

IWLPImages

Indonesia regularly flouts international law. When this happens, ILWP responds in the public arena, through news articles, interviews and social media posts. To do this, we conduct legal and practical research.

Who we are

The work of ILWP is overseen by a management body who meet monthly to discuss ongoing legal advice and legal research projects.
